![]() Mary moved to Patriots Colony in Williamsburg several years after Bill’s death in 2002, where her skill at bridge came in handy. They retired in Lexington where Mary frequently and graciously hostessed her family and friends, including Bill's VMI 1950B classmates - brother rats. They enjoyed his final assignment the most when "The Colonel" was commandant of cadets at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington during 1972-77. She ably raised four daughters while relocating frequently in support of Bill's U.S. In 1950 Mary married William J "Buck" Buchanan and became a dedicated wife, mother, and community volunteer. Mary grew up in Monroe, New York, among her extended paternal family and graduated from Duke University in 1949. She was born on February 22, 1928, the younger daughter of Charles Knight Brooks and Elizabeth Bump Brooks. Mary Brooks Buchanan, a longtime resident of Lexington, Virginia, died on Novemin Williamsburg. The Obaugh Funeral Home, McDowell, Virginia, is in charge of arrangements. Above all, he will be remembered for his kind and compassionate nature and his unconditional love for his wife and family. In his spare time, Garland enjoyed time spent bowling, fly fishing, traveling and singing in the church choir. Garland was a long-time member, elder and treasurer for Monterey Presbyterian Church and was the last charter member of the Mill Gap Ruritan Club as well as one of the original members of the Economic Authority of Highland County. He retired as the hardware manager of Rockingham Cooperative. ![]() He was a self-employed bookkeeper for various county businesses and individuals and tax preparer for over 60 years. On September 26, 1953, he married Lillian Jean Simmons.Ī 16-year-old graduate of Monterey High School, Garland went on to attend and graduate top of his class from Dunsmore Business College. He was born in Little Egypt, the son of the late Charles Stanley and Evelyn Mary (Crummett) Dever.
